i'm looking for opinions on buying an E28. while i have down time for motor work in the E30, i'm planning on buying an E28 as a DD. i don't know enough about them and their potential problems by comparison to the E30. what's the aftermarket like? how hard is it to find euro bumpers (cost?)? how much do they weigh? is it worth restoring one to pristine condition as my DD and making my E30 a dedicated track car? or vice versa?
dish it out, guys. especially mark. fuckin-a, man. you live right across the street from me! maybe you could give me a tour of yours?

Go to www.mye28.com for starters. You may get lucky and find a sweet one with some common mods already done.
I love my e28 and will likely drive it as long as there are wheels on it.
"Aftermarket" isn't strong but there are lots of OEM parts from other models that really help.
Aftermarket suspension upgrades are readily available.
Euro bumpers, headlights, grills and other parts are readily available and many can still be bought from BMW.
There is a company called Turbo Charging Dynamics that will make your e28 fly.
Add a 3:73, 3:64 or 3:46 LSD
I've driven 87 535is for the last 2 years with only one issue and that didn't stop me from driving the car.
My 1-10 opinion is:
Feel & Drivability: 9 (after this era BMWs lost some of that seat-of-the pants feel)
Comfort: 9 (If you get a model with sport sears you can drive almost anywhere in complete comfort)
Performance: 7-8: (Compared to todays cars it's slow)
Handling: 8-9 (for a 4 door 20+ year old car few if any 4 doors cars of it's era will out handle the E28)
Maintenance Costs: Lower than most other BMWs.
I won't bore you with my list of mods, suffice it to say I wouldn't be driving one if I didn't LOVE the car!
If you want to check mine out you are welcome to do so, but I must warn you....if you get an E28 you may sell your E30, or delegate it to track only use.
If you want to hook up give me a call: 602-619-5096, we can meet at the Lowes across the street from you.

+1
and if you get one with an m30 that motor is BULLETPROOF. i drove mine for about 15+ miles with NO COOLANT and that motor still turns over and will start, obviosly it was ruind but it didnt leave me stranded in 115+ degree weather.
LONG LIVE THE M30!!!!!

cool. i'll give you a call sometime soon. i have an 84' 528E lined up for a steal of a price. it's one of my good freinds as of 10 years that lives in vegas, so i know i can trust his opinion on the condition of the car. the only flaw with it is the SI board batteries (speedometer) and of course, the eta motor.
if i am going to use it as a clean, restored, stock DD, then the eta isn't a problem for fuel economy. but if in the case i do fall in love with it, an M30 or possibly something with a couple more cylinders sounds like a great idea. it's just mandatory that i get all the european exterior pieces, as i despise the park bench bumpers.. haha..

for what? an eta?
i'm actually thinking about using an 93 octane (or higher) chip for my M42. i'd run it with water/meth to compensate for our 91 octane, of course. then possibly a DASC, schrick bumpsticks, and some larger injectors. i could be wasting my time with that, so idk what to do right now.
if i'm still going to swap the motor, i'm going to need this E28 for transportation, so i really don't want to dish out cash to mod it. all the funds will go toward the E30. i'm not even sure what kind of EMS an E28 eta uses. but if you can find a chip for an M42 for the time being, then sold! haha..

What are the last 3 numbers on the ECU tag?........and how much?
I just installed my 059 spare 3 weeks ago and i was looking until a few days ago. I just bough tall 4 computers off ebay for $65 shipped so I don't need it, but I may know someone that might be interested, depending on the number on the tag.

If you buy the E28 ETA I wouldn't do anything to it but drive it. If you decide to mod the headlights and bumpers you'll want to save all the stuff you take out.....just in case you decide to upgrade to a 535is later.
The E28 535is is the one you'll eventually want as a keeper DD, plenty of power and still 25 MPG. Oh, and the 535is has the sport seats too!

The ECU is for the 82-87 528E, so there you go....your first mod!

i used to have a 84 533i, that was a bullet proof car, i ran it with a clogged radiator and no radiator fans at all for a whole summer. it constantly ran in "red" and never had any issues. finally had an accident with 233k miles on the clock and never fixed her. great great cars.

If you want a ride, come to Firebird on Sunday and I'll give you a taste of an E28 in action . Call me Saturday if you plan to come out.
I won't know when I run until late Friday, one thing for sure I am running "time only" runs after our comp runs and all of that happens after noon.
